Ben Smith's latest collaborative endeavor finds him pairing his own Brush Footwear with Pittburgh's Mattress Factory Art Museum. A live-in establishment that houses artists traveling in from across the world, Mattress exhibits room-sized works called installations that are created on-site. One of Mattress' most notable installations is the "Infinity Dots Mirrored Room," a permanent collection created by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama in 1996. Infinity Dots is an illusional piece pulled off with the use of glass, Formica, black light and decals.
Inspired by one of the elements of Infinity Dots, which consists of female mannequins with red dot-covered bodies in a white mirrored corridor of the same design, Smith handpainted high and low-cut versions of the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star following a similar theme. Additionally, he created simple black glossy Chucks with Mattress Factory logos on the sides.
One of the Mattress Factory x Brush sneakers was auctioned off at the annual 2011 Urban Garden Party.
